Stop sitting around and waiting for handouts, says Nicholas Brancker.
One of Barbados’ outstanding musicians, Brancker said this was the very advice he had followed himself when he started out in entertainment at the age of 14.
And, he dismissed any notion that he got his fame because he had come from a middle class family in Barbados – the Branckers.
“Where I am is as a result of serious struggle. I’m still struggling. But I want you all to believe in yourself. We are not sitting down in any room and begging anybody . . . ,” advised Brancker, who was speaking at a recent round-table discussion on Financing Creativity – Risk, Responsibility Or Opportunity For Cultural Practitioners.  
“They are being paid to give out money, and we love them for that; but at the end of the day they are providing a service. We are the ones who are generating the income.”
The session attracted a number of lending and grant agency representatives.
