Miss Barbados World 2012 Marielle Wilkie had a quiet send-off last week Monday after arriving at the Grantley Adams International Airport courtesy of MQI in the new BMW5 series with just mum Christine, dad Derek and sister Olivia.
Boarding her Virgin Atlantic flight to London in upper class, Marielle had a stop over in Shanghai before ending up in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, for the Miss World Final on August 18 with 120 other beautiful women.
With Miss Barbados World as the only pageant she has entered, Marielle said she was excited to represent Barbados, make new friends and showcase her charity The Tomorrow Project.
Travelling alone since the Miss World contestants are not allowed chaperones, Marielle will be allowed to tell her parents she has reached safely and then all contact will be through the Miss World organization.
“I will do my best,” Marielle said, adding that she hope Barbadians would go online and vote for her and send well wishes through the Miss World Facebook page.
Her entire wardrobe was sponsored by Dingolay.
Have you started learning any Chinese yet before your arrival?
Yes, several weeks ago I downloaded a Mandarin App on my iPad and have been practising some basic greetings and phrases over the past weeks. I’ve also been learning about Chinese customs and etiquette. All very interesting!!!
What’s your beauty regime like?
Eat healthy, drink lots of water, get enough sleep, exercise, exercise, exercise and keep a positive attitude at all times!!!
The time in China is going to be about six weeks. How many pairs of shoes have you packed?
I’ve tried not to go overboard with the shoes as it’s going to be a very long journey getting there and back, with several flight changes before I reach my final destination in Ordos, Inner Mongolia . . . so excess baggage and overweight charges will be an issue. I’ve therefore tried to pack shoes that will “multitask” with all my various outfits. Probably about six pairs or so.
What is your game plan going into the Miss World pageant?
They say,“if you fail to prepare, then you prepare to fail”, so I’ve spent the past few months getting myself prepared, both physically and mentally.
My sponsor, Claire Worme of Dingolay, has been invaluable in helping me with this, not only where my wardrobe is concerned, but on a personal level as well.
The Miss Barbados World Organization has also been extremely supportive in preparing me for this “trip of a lifetime”. I’m very grateful to them, as well as to my parents, family and friends who have all been incredibly helpful on all levels.
So as I embark on this journey, I can only say that I will remain focused on the task ahead and will do my absolute best as I take Barbados to the world!!!
