Govt may float bond for UWI
The Barbados government is to consider floating a large bond to help pay off its $150 million debt to the University of the West Indies (UWI).
That indication came from Denis Kellman, Minister of Industry, Small Business and Rural development, during a visit to New York.
However, he said that while the Freundel Stuart administration was firmly committed to paying off its UWI debt, the region’s foremost educational institution must also meet Barbados half-way by stopping the poaching of students who should be in the Community College, Erdiston Teachers Training College and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic but were now at the Cave Hill campus.
“I have heard about it (the bond issue) and it is something we will have to discuss,” he told the DAILY NATION when asked about the proposed debenture.
“What I will say is that we will seek to solve the problem [with the UWI] but it will be by using more than one way,” he commented.
