MAKE IT SIX in a row for Russell Moseley.
Barbados’ No.1 tennis player confirmed his ranking by coming from a set down to beat Christopher King 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s Christopher Howitt Tennis final at the Ocean View courts.
The top seed has now captured the last six local tournaments, including his first ever national championship in September.
“I just always thought I had more in the tank when I was losing more matches,” said Moseley of his rise up the ranks.
“Then the whole disappointment with [not getting selected for] the Davis Cup was more of a reality check for myself so I stepped up my game to a level where I have left nothing to chance.”
But Moseley wasn’t quite at that level at the start of the match, getting broken twice by King and failing to convert a break opportunity.
“My feet were not moving and I wasn’t really sure what to do so then I started second-guessing myself and he happened to get two breaks,” Moseley explained.
The top-seed subsequently found his footwork in the second set, taking control of the exchanges by being more aggressive earlier in the points. The result was a back and forth set that Moseley eventually won by breaking his opponent at 5-4.
He then served out the match after needing just a single break in the third and decisive frame.
Moseley defeated Davis Cup player and No. 5 seed Seanon Williams 7-5, 6-0 in the semi-finals to give notice to the selectors for next year’s Davis Cup team. (JM)
