Work ills
Aggrieved employees of the Psychiatric Hospital want the man who killed a fellow inmate last month removed from the institution and sent to Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds.
In a three-page letter to THE NATION, the employees charged that the wards, including the maximum security unit where this patient was confined, were not adequately staffed due to an acute shortage of personnel at the St Michael institution.
This was among several grievances outlined by the staff in the document and drawn to the attention of representatives of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).
Staff also complained about temporary workers not being paid for two to three months as a result of what they called “tardiness” in the processing of the paperwork, victimization, rodent infestation in work areas such as the kitchen, inadequate work supplies, supersession of staff without an interview process and a lack of uniforms for the past three years.
