Tigers whip Challengers

Apparently, the third time was indeed the charm for Tigers.
Latecia Greene scored eight of her game-high 17 points during a pivotal 19-2 fourth-quarter run as Tigers broke open a tight game for their first win of this women’s basketball season in Sunday’s  57-36 victory over Challengers at the Barbados Community College.
It was the first win in three tries for the perennial  title contenders, who had suffered a shocking upset to league minnows Warrens a week before.
And Tigers almost received yet another scare after the winless Challengers managed to stay within four points (38-34) heading into the fourth behind Amanda Key and Janelle Griffith.
But Challengers only scored a further Cheryl Steele basket the rest of the way while Greene and Jacqui Browne duly put away the contest in the game’s decisive quarter.
Browne finished with 11 points and Irecka Louis added 16 points for Tigers, who improved to a 1-2 record. Key was the lone Challengers (0-4) player in double digits with 11 points.
Earlier, Wanda Agard-Belgrave had 28 points as the league-leading lady Cavs (4-0) remained unbeaten following a 62-45 beating of Combined Schools Hoopsters.
The schoolgirls actually led 17-13 after the first quarter before staying within three points (26-29) by the halftime break.
However, Agard-Belgrave and Maria Cumberbatch combined for 12 third-quarter points of a subsequent 15-5 run that blew the contest wide open.
Ashlee Daniel led the schoolgirls (1-2) with 14 points while Winmarie Bowen and Makela Walcott scored 12 and 11 points respectively. (JM)
