Upgrade Six Men’s to market status
FISHERMEN and fish vendors operating from Six Men’s, St Peter, face three major challenges, says boat owner and fish vendor Pedro Hinds.
Hinds, who has been operating full-time from Six Men’s for the past six years but has been in fishing for many years, identified the problems as the need for cold storage, ice facilities and an offal disposal facility.
“Sometimes when we go to the market in Speightstown for ice no market constables are there or the market is closed. The problem is that Six Men’s is a landing site, not a market . . . . [Those facilities cannot be set up] because it is not listed as a market,” Hinds said.
Concerning disposal of the remains of fish after cleaning, Hinds said he takes his waste out to sea but the average fish vendor throws the leftovers “on the break”, so they wash back up on the sand when the tide comes back in.
