Artist Catherine Forter-Chee-A-Tow’s work can be said to be unique and distinctive.
Market Scene II, Sunny Market and Market Scene I are some of the pieces currently on show at The Gallery of Caribbean Art, Northern Business Centre, Speightstown, St Peter.
Chee-A-Tow is no ordinary artist, and her depictions of market life – no doubt in the wider Caribbean – reflect her keen interest in the Caribbean vendor and the fact that she sees the vendor as a subject worthy of being placed on canvas.
With each stroke of her brush, Chee-A-Tow has managed to capture aspects of “market life”, whether it is the fisherman getting ready to sell his fish, or the fruit or vegetable vendor with his or her tray of produce. Either way, this artist’s impressions create images of hard-working men and women struggling to make an honest day’s living in what we know as a highly competitive field.
