JOURNALISTS VISITING for Crop Over are providing nearly $2 million in coverage which the island cannot pay for, says parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner.
She said an analysis had been done of media reports publicizing Crop Over and Barbados to the world, and the coverage was worth US$1 million (BDS$2 million).
“We assessed the value, and it is coverage to the tune of US$1 million which we receive from the journalists you see here today,” she told a media conference with tourism and cultural officials at Hilton Barbados yesterday morning.
Noting that 40 journalists had come in for the festival, mainly from the Caribbean, Britain and Canada but also from Italy and the Netherlands for the first time, she said their exposure of the country was promotional work for which Barbados could not pay. . (RJ)
