Inniss: No need to rush
Minister of Industry and International Business Donville Inniss is not in favour of introducing an economic citizenship programme to Barbados.
However, he said Government was well within its right to discuss the issue since considering the matter did not mean it had to be implemented.
Earlier this month Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said he was in discussion with other officials about whether it should be possible for foreigners with high net worth to receive full rights as citizens through investment.
“It is not something into which we can rush headlong; we have to look at all the implications,” he said at the time.
He added: “The world is changing very quickly, we are in a competitive global environment and we have to make sure that we always have a competitive edge if we are to be ahead of the game, as it were, and therefore that matter is receiving our attention as well.”
Speaking at Hilton Barbados today during the launch of International Business Week, Inniss said Stuart had not discussed the matter with him but he agreed that Government would have to deliberate very cautiously. (NB)
