Former Barbados captain and repeat Caribbean Most Valuable Player, Elwyn Oxley, is on an elite list of scorers in NORCECA which he had led for two years from 2007 to 2009.
Oxley is ranked number two in the 30-points performers in a match which he established with 32 points when Barbados defeated Mexico on September 20, 2007. Five players have reached the 30-point plateau in NORCECA since the rally-point rule was established and the Volleyball Informative System (VIS) was implemented in 2001.
Oxley was knocked off of the top spot in 2009 when Dominican Republic’s Jose Caceres, who stands at 6ft 11in poured in 37 points against Mexico.
Caceres became the first player to score 30 points twice when he achieved 31 points in a losing five-setter to Cuba on Thursday night.
Caceres also holds the single-match record of the men’s Pan American Cup with 37 points against Puerto Rico on June 6, 2009. After No. 1 Caceres and No. 2, Oxley are Mexico’s Leonardo Mango and Cuba’s Wilfredo Leon who are tied in third place with 31-point performances.
Manzo had his big game against the Dominican Republic in the same match Caceres set the all-time record, while Leon produced his offensive barrage on September 3, 2011 against the United States. Mexico’s hammer Ivan Contreras complete the list of members of the exclusive club with his 30-point production against Puerto Rico on September 28, 2003. (KB)
