KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – Fashion designer Calvin Have, one of the five men charged with dancehall singer, Vybz Kartel, of murdering a businessman in 2011, was freed today because of lack of evidence.
The prosecution has asked the Home Circuit Court to find him not guilty.
Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has been charged with entertainer Shawn Campbell, popularly known as “Shawn Storm”, André St John, Shane Williams and Kahira Jones of murdering Clive “Lizard” Williams, who the prosecution said had been killed at the home of the entertainer on August 18, 2011. His body has never been found.
The police allege that Williams was killed after he and another man, who is the prosecution’s main witness, were taken to Kartel’s home to account for a lost firearm. Police said that they have in their possession video and audio recordings linking all the accused to the murder.
Jury selection, which began on Monday, is still continuing.
In July, Supreme Court judge Bryan Sykes instructed the 12-member jury to return the verdicts of not guilty in the trial of Kartel and two other men charged with the July 12, 2011 shooting death of businessman Barrington “Bossie” Bryan.
The judge made the ruling after deeming that the statements of two witnesses were inadmissible.
