BARBADIAN SUPER STAR Rihanna was presented with the first ever American Music Awards (AMA) Icon Award last night.
The presentation was made by her mother Monica Fenty and Rihanna later hailed her relatives and former neighbours from “Westbury Road, Barbados”.
After first thanking God Almighty, Monica Fenty spoke glowingly about her daughter and praised her for being a strong woman. She said she was very proud of Rihanna and out of all of her daughter’s experiences, she always looked for the positives.
Rihanna thanked her mother for just saying “yes” and starting the musical journey. She acknowledged the role played by friends and family who provided a solid background and also thanked her management team.
“Right now I cannot believe at 25-years-old that I’m holding an Icon Award,” Rihanna said. “That is weird to even say out loud.”
She sang her hit song Diamonds during the show.
Rihanna beat Ciara and Alicia Keys to win the AMA Award for Favourite Soul/R&B Female. She was also nominated for Artist of the Year, Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Favourite Soul R&B Album. (SAT/AP)
