Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Opposition Leader Mia Mottley have called on Barbadians to act responsibly in the face of challenges before the country as it celebrates 47 years of Independence.
In his Independence Day message, the Prime Minister noted Barbados had emerged from similar previous challenges with the national character strengthened and intact, and that the present challenges would require a similar response from all.
“If we try to meet the challenges individually and separately,” Stuart cautioned, “we are foredoomed to perish together. A united response is called for in our present circumstances. No other kind of response will meet the needs of this moment.”
Independence meant freedom, he added, but freedom did not mean the liberty to do what one wanted; rather, it meant the power to do what one ought to do in the national interest. (AB)
