Canvas and clay
ARTISTS Melanie Bishop and Maggie Bell are currently staging a “want to view” kind of art exhibition at the Gallery of Caribbean Art, Northern Business Centre, Speightstown, St Peter.
This wonderful marriage of clay-glazed and acrylic creations also gives viewers the opportunity of “shopping” for some great works under one roof.
Bell, a second generation potter, is well trained in both the technical and artistic side of pottery. As such, she ably develops local clay, working with it in ways that have never before been done in Barbados, as she freely explores sizes, shapes and surfaces. She also moves from one technique to another with ease, creating distinctive styles that capture the liveliness of her subjects.
Bishop, who is recognized for her unique creativity and attention to detail, views canvas as a playground to illustrate her concepts, which are then carried over more abstractly into sculptural pieces.
She enjoys the storytelling aspect that paintings allow her to bring out on canvas.
The exhibition runs until December 11. (CH)
