Nursing home watch

In the wake of a few “unfortunate incidents” involving elderly patients and nursing homes, the senior medical officer with responsibility for elderly wants to see greater health and safety at all nursing homes.
In addition, Dr Kenneth George wants those who are operating facilities without the requisite licences to make themselves legal.
George was speaking as the Barbados Elderly Care Association (BECA) hosted a supervisors’ seminar earlier this week entitled Raising The Bar In Our Quest For Excellence.
George noted that while there were 65 registered nursing homes on the island, of which 50 to 60 per cent were members of BECA, there were also many that were not registered.
