BARBADOS, inspired by Jonathan Carter’s brilliant century and a typically attacking half-century from Dwayne Smith totally outplayed Trinidad and Tobago in their first NAGICO Super50 tournament Group B match on Sunday night at Queen’s Park Oval to win by 28 runs.
Carter’s classy 109 off 111 balls with nine fours and five sixes and Smith’s 83 off 72 balls ensured Barbados reached 269 for eight after the match was reduced to 45 overs per innings after rain delayed the start.
Barbados’ decision to bat was vindicated by a runaway start thanks to Smith, who took a shine to Ravi Rampaul from the first over. Six fours and a six Smith took off the West Indies pacer before he was withdrawn from the attack, 32 runs in all in that spell.
Smith, who reached the fastest regional 50 off 39 balls didn’t even miss Kraigg Brathwaite (two), bowled by Dwayne Bravo in the fourth over, or Rashidi Boucher, leg before wicket to leg-spinner Imran Khan for 13.
