French Islands join ACS
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe have been granted associate membership within the Trinidad-based Association of Caribbean States (ACS).
The ACS said that the membership was granted during the 19th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the ACS last week.
It said prior to this, the two countries were represented by France in the 25-member grouping that includes countries in the English, French, Dutch and Spanish speaking Caribbean.
The statement said that Guatemala has now assumed chairmanship of the Ministerial Council for the period 2014 to 2015, replacing Mexico.
The meeting here was also attended by the foreign ministers of Haiti, Guyana and St Lucia.
The ACS is recognised as the organisation for consultation, cooperation and concerted action in trade, transport, sustainable tourism and natural disasters in the Greater Caribbean and is comprised of 25 Member Countries and seven Associate Member countries.
