IT’S ASH WEDNESDAY.
The traditional start of the period of Lent was observed at several churches across the island today.
Christians observe Lent as a time of mourning, reflection and abstinence. It lasts for 40 days, the same period that Christ spent in the wilderness. It ends on Easter Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Christ.
There is a symbolic marking of ash on the forehead.
Today, the children from Hillaby Turners Hall and Welches Primary took part in the Ash Wednesday service at St Thomas Parish Church, while those from Sharon Primary attended Sharon Moravian Church. (SAT)
