NATIONAL UNDER-21 netball captain Rieah Holder and teammate Shonica Wharton combined for 32 goals to lead UWI Blackbirds to a shocking upset of league queens CO Williams Rangers 33-32 in the opening Senior Knockout match of the 2014 season tonight at the Netball Stadium.
Goal shooter Wharton sank 18 goals from 27 attempts while Holder scored 14 of 20. Holder came up big under pressure, scoring the last three goals to give the Blackbirds a 33-31 advantage.
Kittitian Mechelle Liburd scored the other goal for the Blackbirds.
Vanessa Reid-Cox carried the shooting load for the Rangers scoring 19 of 28 as they led 13-7 and 20-16 before the Blackbirds locked the scores 25-all at the end of the third quarter.
Barbados goal attack Nikita Piggott scored 13 from 18 attempts before sitting out the final quarter.
A good crowd, including more than 50 supporters from Cave Hill, watched the opening exchanges which produced the excitement normally associated with a season-ender. (KB)
