Brutality, cries mum
A?DAY?after Amnesty International called on Barbados to investigate reports of police brutality against two men, a mother charged that her son was beaten so badly by police he had to be hospitalised.
Marcelle Wharton told the DAILY?NATION?that her 36-year-old son Fabian Cooke was hospitalised at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) last Friday with several bruises about the body and soft tissue injury as a result of being tortured by the police.
Only last Thursday Amnesty International, the watchdog agency for human rights, called on authorities in Barbados to conduct an independent investigation into allegations that Jamar Antonio Headley, 33, of Ivy Main Road, and Adrian Romaria Mottley, 19, of Bayville, both in St Michael, were “tortured and their confessions obtained under duress and [to] bring those responsible to justice”.
This was after their attorney Brian Weekes made an official complaint to Amnesty.
