Junior kings and queens of badminton crowned

SABEEL FOSTER and Shae Martin successfully defended their respective singles titles when the 2014 Junior National Badminton Championships concluded yesterday at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Foster retained his Under-19 title, defeating D’Andre Thorpe 21-19, 21-18 and was also a champion in the doubles, teaming up with Cory Fanus to beat Thorpe and Martin 2-16, 21-16.
In the Under-17 division, Martin beat Jehu Gaskin 21-15, 21-18. The 14-year-old Combermere student was a triple champion, later teaming up with Kashem Moore to win the doubles against Kodie King and Nicholas Sobers 21-17, 21-15. With Amanda Haywood, he won the mixed doubles 21-9, 21-4, beating John Cupples and Krystal Clarke.
Kennie King will have bragging rights at home after defeating his older brother Kodie to win the Under-15 boys’ singles championship match 21-19, 9-21, 21-17.  Kennie also added the Under-13 singles’ title to his list with a 21-10, 21-17 victory over Keenan Scantlebury, but fell short in the Under-15 boys’ doubles, losing to Kodie and Nicholas Sobers 21-18, 20-22, 21-17.
Haywood continues to shine among the girls. She beat Clarke 21-6, 21-6 to win the Under-17 girls’ singles.
Onika Moe defeated Crystal Derrel 21-11, 21-13 to take the Under-19 girls’ singles crown and Mckenzie Howard came from behind to beat Kayla Miller 16-21, 21-14, 22-20 in the Under-13 division. (PR/SAT)
