THE MINISTRY of Commerce has launched a new database which allows consumers to compare prices at 21 different supermarkets across the island.
The launch took place today at the Courtyard by Marriott, Hastings, Christ Church.
Chief information officer with Garnet Technologies Inc Brian Linton built the database. He said it could also be accessed via mobile devices for those without computer access.
It can be accessed via www.commerce.gov.bb/shop.
Minister of Commerce Donville Inniss said the previous method of showing the prices in the print media was putting too much of a financial strain on Government, so making the investment in the database was more cost effective and in line with modern times.
“In an era where consumers are technologically driven, now is the opportune time to have prices of basic food commodities presented electronically. There are some persons who do not now have ready access to technology and would be challenged to embrace it but I guarantee that over time these people will come on board and adapt,” Inniss said.
“We are living in the technological revolution and the use of technology is limitless. We should therefore use the opportunity presented which would enable us to realise the tremendous benefits of the technology at our disposal. I assure you that this database would enable consumers to be more informed and will provide them with greater access to pricing information in real time,” he added. (CA)
