BARBADIANS?ARE BEING encouraged to add lionfish to their platters.
And as a result the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) will be having its first ever fish derby on Saturday morning where divers and fishermen will compete for lionfish catches and top chefs will serve up tasty dishes for Barbadians with the delicacy.
This initiative was announced yesterday by marine biologist with the CZMU?Caroline Bissada, during a press conference at the old CZMU?headquarters on Bay Street.
Giving an update on the presence of the lionfish in Barbados Bissada said the venomous, fast reproducing species had invaded all of the coastal areas around Barbados and local divers were catching 50 at a time while they were in being caught in fishermen’s fish pots.
She said while the lionfish was being sold at $10 a pound efforts were underway to get hoteliers to add it to their menu.
The derby will take place at Harbour Lights, Bay Street, St Michael. (MB)
