BARBADOS WON TWO more medals on the second day of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Junior Athletics Championships today in Morelia, Mexico.
Akela Jones won gold in the Under-20 girls’ long jump and Shamar Rock got bronze in the boys’ equivalent.
Jones’ winning leap of 6.41 metres came with a mighty wind of (3.7). Annastacia Forrester of Jamaica was second with 5.90m, also wind-aided, and Panama’s Nathalee Aranda third with 5.82m.
Rock, who would have entered today’s final as a gold medal favourite after leaping 7.84 here at the National Championships, was good for 7.47 metres on the day.
Laquan Nairn of The Bahamas won the event with 7.55m, two centimetres better than Mexico’s Ricardo Morales.
In the discus, Romario Antoine (48.92) and Dequan Lovell (42.71) finished fifth and eighth, respectively in the Under-20 boys’ event which was won by Khyle Higgs of The Bahamas with 54.64m.
Michael Nicholls placed eighth in the Under-18 boys’ 200m in 21.73 seconds as gold went to Jamaica’s Chad Walker with 21.21.
Meanwhile, Shakera Hall’s record of 13.53 seconds in the Under-18 girls’ 100m hurdles was broken, replaced by Jamaica’s Jeanine Williams who took gold in 13.46 seconds.
However, Jones’ mark of 6.36m in the Under-18 girls’ long jump will remain for two more years after Anguilla’s Rechelle Meade won in 5.92m, no threat to the books.
The meet concludes tomorrow. (SAT)
