ONE OF THE THINGS outgoing executive director of the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA), George Griffith wants to leave the organisation with is a new name.
“Over the past 60 years, this organisation has transitioned from a having a pre-occupation with birth control to the point where it is a comprehensive social agency specialising in advocacy and having a special emphasis on sexual reproductive health.
“However, although this transition has been in the making for the past 25 years, people still see us as a birth control organisation so I am recommending, in keeping with our 2014 to 2018 strategic plan, that there be a very assertive rebranding of the organisation,” he said during a telephone interview today.
Griffith said he had two proposals – the Barbados Reproductive Health Association and the Barbados Family Health Association.
“The board is of course free to either accept any one of these; come up with their own name or even disregard [the suggestion] altogether but I believe those names will reflect us as we are today, not only limited to contraceptives, but dedicated to general medical health services; training, education, advocacy and all that falls in between,” he said.
