THE FREUNDEL STUART ADMINISTRATION is backing down in some ways on the controversial municipal solid waste tax imposed on most landowners.
Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler said that Cabinet,  after “listening to what people have had to say”, decided to offer a complete waiver to pensioners whose improved property values were $190 000 or less.
This is similar to the waiver this group gets from land taxes.
Also in the “few adjustments” to the tax that has been the centre of a wave of discontent across most sectors in the island, Sinckler said agriculturalists would now only pay 50 per cent of the solid waste tax that they were originally asked to pay.
