Support for Owen
ECONOMIST AND UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) lecturer Professor Michael Howard has thrown his support behind former Prime Minister Owen Arthur’s stand on the controversial municipal solid waste tax issue.
“I must applaud my former university colleague and friend Owen Arthur for his principled stand on this issue,” he told the SUNDAY SUN yesterday.
More important, Howard said: “There has been a great emotional outpouring about the solid waste tax. However, this tax is necessary for Barbados at this time and I do not believe the solid waste tax should be repealed.”
Howard’s comments followed Arthur’s contention that he could not support the political stance of his former party, the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) which called for the tax to be repealed.
