General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Dennis Clarke, is keeping his fingers crossed that next month the new Employment Rights Tribunal will hear the matter involving the firing of almost 200 workers from the National Conservation Commission (NCC).

But he also feels that the NCC’s board of management should resign over its decision.

“I think what has happened is that this whole scenario (laying off workers) has been so played out that the minister can feel happy about what is happening in his constituency and that is most unfortunate. We feel the decision made by the board is [wrong] and the union believes that all of them should resign,” Clarke told the DAILY NATION yesterday.

He said the dismissals had placed tremendous pressure on the union, since a lot of the displaced workers were now unable to feed their families. (TS)
