CRIME IN BARBADOS is on a decline, even though murders have increased by 21 per cent.

Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith today reported a 16 per cent reduction in crime when compared to the corresponding period last year.

Griffith said the decrease was significant and unprecedented and was occurring at a time when Barbados was going through tough economic times.

“I know that generally you (media) and the public at large seem not to embrace statistics that speak to a reduction in crime. If they import an indication of an escalation you tend to accept them more readily,” he told a press briefing held at the police high command headquarters at Roebuck Street in The City.

The acting top cop said the 16 per cent decrease indicated there were 949 fewer crimes this year compared to the same period last year. (TS)
