Church reaching out to jobless
Very quietly, the Catholic Church has launched a service arm to help unemployed Barbadians find jobs as more and more people are being laid off in the economic downturn.
But it is not just a Catholic thing. As Bishop Jason Gordon explained yesterday, the organisation, called The Hub, which was started earlier this year, is about people helping people, and they have joined efforts with counterparts in the Anglican Church.
“It is specifically targeting people who have lost jobs, and trying to help them to link with people who have needs for skills,” Gordon said.
“So it is linking skills with opportunities and trying to see how we can help, but also bringing people together to brainstorm to see if we can find non-traditional ways for a livelihood.
“So that even in the interim, we might start small businesses or provide other services where people can get some income until they are into full employment again.” (AB)
