Seventeen and a half per cent on nothing.

That is what local promoters and people staging events may have to pay out if it is true that the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) has started to enforce an existing clause in the legislation which governs it.

Speaking at the media launch of this year’s Hennessy Artistry show at Divi Southwinds on Friday night, one of the show’s promoters, Al Gilkes, said they had received word from the BRA that a value added tax charge was being attached to all complimentary tickets for shows.

Gilkes said they had not received official word as of Friday, but the tax would have an immediate impact on the December 6 show at Kensington Oval because it had not been budgeted for.

“We can easily attach VAT to any person we are attributing or giving complimentary tickets to. The only problem is where we have contractual arrangements with sponsors, where that includes a certain amount of tickets for them to do their own promotions which further promote the event.

“They now [have] to pay an extra amount in support of the event which they had not initially agreed on,” Gilkes told the SUNDAY SUN.
