Barbados has what it takes to supply all of its energy needs from renewable sources within the next ten years.

This is the view of Olav Hohmeyer, a German university professor with years of experience in sustainable energy systems.

And while he estimated it would require a $1.8 billion investment and involve the installation of photovoltaic and wind energy systems, as well as storage facilities on limited land space, Hohmeyer said the savings would run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Hohmeyer, who is professor and chair of energy economics at the University of Flensburg, Germany, and is currently teaching the graduate level course on energy economics at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, outlined his plan Monday night during a lecture at the Grande Salle, Tom Adams Financial Centre, Bridgetown.

The lecture was held as part of the Barbados Renewable Energy Association’s celebration of National Energy Week. (SC)
