The exciting Antonio “Lil Man” Daniel led the higher ranked seeds into the round of 16 when the preliminaries of the Massy United Insurance Clash of the Titans were rounded off at The Villages at Coverley, Christ Church, on Thursday night.

Playing his trademark smashes and deadly injections, Daniel defeated Simon Bayne 21-18, 21-11, with Bayne showing great fight against the number two ranked, but co-favourite, Daniel. From early it was obvious that Daniel was experimenting to get the feel of the court, and his form after his bout with the mosquito-borne chikungunya disease.

That gave Bayne, who is a solid defender, the chance to lock the scores at 12 and he actually led Daniel 13-12 and 14-12 before the shots master took charge of the game and his opponent. Daniel crunched some vicious smashes down the line and also conjured up some short balls and angles that gave Bayne no chance to touch the ball.

Number three seed Curtis Jones had to dig deep to stop the dangerous Jeffrey “Borah” Best after Best took the first game, employing the strategy of keeping the ball in Jones’ backhand and had looked likely to score the first major upset in the final match of the night.

However, displaying the determination and tenacity which he is noted for, Jones threw off the loud and persistent taunts from two of Best’s biggest supporters as well as the tremendous form of “Borah” to take the match 13-21, 21-16, 21-14.

Scores locked

Earlier, the talkative Jerry Harris hovered on the point of advancing after battling Anderson “St George” Sealy in the decisive third game from 15-20 to lock the scores and advanced to game and match point 21-20. However, Sealy survived by locking the scores 21-all before taking the match 12-21, 21-16, 23-21, thanks to a serving error from Harris at 21-22.

The stern Julian “Snake” Quimby had to fight from a game down to stop the promising Sylvanus Doyle 15-21, 21-10, 21-14. The stylish Aaron Barker easily stopped Terry Dottin 21-8, 22-20, while David Arendell turned back a challenge from Dwayne Lynch 21-17, 21-19.

Stig Merritt once again fought an opponent to three games, but eventually paid the
price physically, and retired due to fatigue, as Marson Johnson took the match 21-13, 18-21, 21-0. Adrian “Dan” Skeete also scored a default victory over Michael Jean.

The round of 16 clashes will see Daniel (2) vs Quimby (15), Jones (3) vs Skeete (14), Arendell (7) vs Sealy (10) and Johnson (6) vs Barker (11).

The other zone’s matchups are Mark “Venom” Griffith (1) vs Darius “Baraccus” Gaskin (17), Julian “Michael Jackson” White (4) vs Shibbir Greenidge (13), Dario Hinds (5) vs Kerry “TC” Francis (21) and Emar Edwards (8) vs Chesterfield “Boy-Boy” Brewster (9).

Those exciting battles will be staged tomorrow night at Coverley with the women taking to the court before the men in their shotgun clashes. (KB)
