A landmark study that researchers hope will lead to a reversal of Type 2 diabetes among Barbadians is being undertaken.
British airline magnate Sir Richard Branson yesterday launched the innovative Barbados Diabetes Reversal Study which is being funded by Virgin Unite, his not-for-profit foundation of the Virgin Group.
It will be undertaken by Professor Nigel Urwin, chair of population health sciences at the Chronic Disease Research Centre, and a team at the University of the West Indies, in collaboration with the Barbados Diabetes Foundation and Diabetes Association of Barbados.
Speaking at a news conference for the launch at the Diabetes Association’s Beckles Road hadquarters, Urwin noted about one in five adult Barbadians currently suffered from Type 2 diabetes, compared with one in 12 globally.
