Arthur: Where is the Opposition?

FORMER PRIME MINISTER Owen Arthur today questioned the tactics being used by the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to get the Speaker of the House of Assembly to vacate the chair for the time being.

BLP MPs are boycotting sessions presided over by Carrington, saying he needs to step aside while a parliamentary committee looks into a recent High Court decision against him.

However, Arthur told reporters: “If the Speaker is to be punished, let the Speaker be punished, but I don’t think that you punish the speaker by not being there [in Parliament] to do the people’s business.”

Arthur also indicated that today’s debate in the House of Assembly on ending the automatic nature of the death penalty for murder was an important one in which the Opposition should be participating.(TY)
