Bajans after top jockeys award
SEVEN-TIME CHAMPION JOCKEY and Sovereign Award winner Patrick Husbands spearheads two other Barbadian jockeys who are among the finalists named in two categories vying for the 2014 Canadian Premier Awards for thoroughbred racing and breeding.
Hosted by the Jockey Club of Canada, the 40th annual Sovereign Award party is to be held at Woodbine Race Track in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on April 10.
The maestro will be joined by Northlands Park-based pair of champion jockey Rico Walcott and apprentice Damario Bynoe. Husbands who has won just about every major race in Canada earned over CAN $10.5 million from his 676 trips to the starting gates of which he entered winner’s enclosure 170 times last year.
Despite battling recurring injuries throughout the year, Husbands still managed to win last year’s Woodbine Jockey Championship. He defeated Luis Contreras (163 wins) and Euro Da Silva (144 wins), both of whom he will again line up against in the quest to be crowned outstanding jockey for 2014.
