THE SANDY LANE Resort has come in for high praise from Acting Minister of Sports, Ronald Jones, for its sponsorship of the upcoming Sandy Lane Gold Cup.

Speaking at a ceremony last Friday at the Grantley Adams International Airport marking the arrival of the Gold Cup, Jones lauded Sandy Lane for supporting the event for the past 18 years.

“I sincerely commend you for your contribution, which has kept the tradition alive and generally expanded the interest of horse racing in Barbados as a sport and as an economic activity,” he stated.

The acting Sports Minister was also of the opinion that the Sandy Lane Gold Cup was an event which added to the country’s economic development through the creation of job opportunities. “It is quite a significant contributor to employment in Barbados, particularly on race day with all of the various stalls and people who are part of serving the public,” he said.

Jones also suggested that members of corporate Barbados, as well as Government, should consider the possibility of night racing, as it would “produce greater levels of economic benefit for Barbados by adding to the levels of employment activity”.

The Sandy Lane Gold Cup, which will be held at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday, March 7, is one of the island’s largest horse racing events. Currently in its 19th year, the event is expected to attract hundreds of local and international spectators. (BGIS)
