Broomes’ call

PARKINSON SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Jeff Broomes is asking the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) to work with him to reduce a “high level” of teacher absenteeism and unpunctuality.

He also wants the union to remind teachers that they cannot leave school during teaching time without authorisation from the principal.

These requests are contained in a seven-page document written by Broomes in response to a full-page advertisement by the BUT published in the last SUNDAY SUN.

The document was also submitted to the Chief Personnel Officer, the National Union of Public Workers, and his attorney Vernon Smith, QC.

Pointing out that absenteeism and unpunctuality negatively impacted the school, Broomes wrote: “I have spoken about this until I am almost blue in the face, but it continues. I implore the union to stand professionally and give some support in encouraging teachers to do their statutory duties.” (MB)
