ABSENTEEISM COST the country close to $300 million in “lost” productivity in seven key sectors between 2012 and 2013, according to figures from the national productivity watchdog.
Speaking on the third day of seminars for this year’s Week Of Excellence at Solidarity House yesterday, the chief manager of the National Productivity Council, Anthony Sobers, said this “alarming” level of absenteeism had a direct link to employee health and wellness. Also included in the statistics was presenteeism, which spoke to people who were on the job but not delivering at a high level of consistency.
The seminar heard that poor dietary habits, lack of exercise and the complications associated with non-communicable diseases affected the overall health of wellness of employees, and could contribute to both absenteeism and presenteeism. (YB)
