Tree lover protests ‘butchery’

“A WANTON BUTCHERY” is how an irate St Peter resident described the felling of trees on Monday and yesterday along the Whitehall, St Peter section of the Ronald Mapp Highway (Highway 2A).

An angry George Gill of Whitehall accused workers from the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) of cutting “healthy trees” that he said were not posing a danger to power lines or vehicular and pedestrian traffic, but rather providing shade and protection to the environment.

Gill protested verbally while the work was being carried out. His landlord, who is the owner of the property, posted two signs along the road yesterday morning, one of which asked the MTW not to “butcher my trees”.
