Rico’s turn to strike Gold

A LOCAL DERBY and a Canadian Derby were not enough. Rico Walcott wanted a Gold Cup and duly delivered yesterday by adding the southern Caribbean’s most celebrated horse race to his résumé with a master class in jockeyship on Sayler’s Creek at the Garrison Savannah.

“It’s a race that everyone in Barbados would like to win because of the prestige. I just rode my heart out and it just happened for me today [yesterday]. I had good position, asked him for something extra, and I just drove him home.

“My mum always wanted to see me win one. My brother (Rickey) has won a Gold Cup, I have a second [place]. My turn just came so I guess I did everything right. I passed the line first,” a jubilant Walcott said after his win.
