SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) – The Dominican Republic is reopening the consulates it closed in neighbouring Haiti following a series of protests that it said had put diplomatic staff at risk.

Dominican consular adviser Pastor Vazez said all five consulates will re-open Tuesday. Ambassador Ruben Silie will also return to Haiti.

Dominican officials said the Haitian government had agreed to increase security at the consulates.

The Dominican Republic closed its consulates March 4 after thousands in Port-au-Prince marched on the consulates to protest the mistreatment of Haitians in the Dominican Republic. Protesters climbed the roof of one consulate and burned the Dominican flag.

The most recent unrest flared after a Haitian man was killed and hung from a tree in the Dominican city of Santiago. Dominican police say the suspects are fellow Haitians.
