Looming price war a plus for shoppers

CONSUMERS WILL BE the big winners from the expected price war between this island’s major supermarkets.

As the mighty Massy group flexes its commercial muscles to grab greater market share and reposition its six supermarkets to be Barbadians’ first choice for shopping, some officials with the other chains have indicated they will be fighting back.

This development is significant because consumers have less spending power than before, so any move that allows them to buy more with the same disposable income would be attractive.

Massy’s recently launched Pocket Sense programme does just that. At present it offers 50 mainly grocery and baby care items at marked down prices, but it plans to add more products, including meats. (SP)
