SUGAR CANE FARMER Patrick Bethell has described the extremely late start to the 2015 sugar harvest as a national disgrace.

Bethell, who is also a major agricultural landowner, told the DAILY NATION yesterday that the situation was “awful” for the sector which has been a major foreign exchange earner for the island for hundreds of years.

The sugar crop is reportedly expected to start on April 7 after several delays, the latest in recent history.

“Under normal circumstances we would have been half-way through the crop by now. I think the current situation is a national disgrace,” Bethell pointed out. (GE)
