Jetty in for revival

THE LONG CLOSED Speightstown jetty is about to get a new lease on life.

And it is coming through a private sector initiative involving a number of business operators with interest in the northern town.

Ken Atherley, divisional manager at Barbados Port Inc., which is responsible for the jetty, revealed that his organisation was now engaged in discussion with the Ministry of Housing and Lands to facilitate the lease of the jetty to the Speightstown group, which is proposing to use its own funds to carry out repairs and then use the facility as part of a larger plan to revitalise the old port town.

Atherley explained that in order to complete the lease arrangement, the jetty would have to be legally subdivided from the Speightsown Esplanade, which is owned by the Government. (RRM)
