JOHN STEINER’S CRUCIFIXION is synonymous with Easter and during Holy Week many Christians in Barbados make the oratorio, a meditation on the sacred Passion of Jesus Christ, a highlight of their Easter celebrations.

From church to church, choirs in Anglican Churches across the island blend voices to present the much loved musical work at this time of year.

At St George’s Parish Church on Tuesday, Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave and Lady Belgrave joined the congregation for the annual performance by the church choir. This year it was enriched with the appearance of Barbados’ leading soprano Amanda Fields, and though her voice was at times drowned out by the organ in her solo The Majesty of Divine Humiliation, her quality soared.
