BARBADOS MADE A COMMENDABLE START to the 2015 CARIFTA Junior Chess Championships yesterday.

FIDE master Orlando Husbands, last year’s senior national champion, was one of several Barbadians who scored victories in the opening round of matches in the morning session at Divi Southwinds Hotel.

Husbands, a student of The Lodge School, defeated Tin Romain of Martinique to secure one of eight wins for Barbados in the Under-20 division of the Massy United Insurance-sponsored championships.

Last year’s gold medallist, Allon Richards of Barbados Community College, was also in winners’ row, defeating fellow Barbadian Derrick Brandon while Lodge’s Bryan Prescod won against woman candidate master Lydia Nurse. (HG)
