As I walk in, the cash register pings – another sale rung up and the patter of little feet, along with the drag of my bigger ones, echoes across the imitation wood flooring.

I pick up a book, quite sure this will be my purchase, as a voice yells from the busy mall hallway – “Come!” followed by the “Cheeze on!” from a crestfallen teenaged girl.

The elder of two boys with her replaces a book on the shelf of the children’s section and the three hustle from the store.

On a late Friday evening, Chattel House Books is still busy; and in this day and age of everything digital, it’s surprising the amount of activity, the variety of ages of the clientele, not to mention the look of the group behind the main counter.
