$25 barrel fee now in operation
COLLECTING A BARREL from the Bridgetown Port will now cost a bit more.
A new $25 per barrel personal effects fee came into effect on April 1 as part of the hike in charges at the facility. This fee is in addition to the regular customs and brokerage costs, and is projected to raise $1.2 million for the Barbados Port Inc (BPI).
The port handles around 50 000 barrels annually, but never charged for this
service until now.
Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, the parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, was emphatic in pointing this out when debate on the Barbados Port Inc. (Transfer of Management and Vesting of Assets) (Amendment) Bill 2014 – which gave effect to the recent increases – took place in the Senate last January.
